Start with the access-route length
For a straight lane, divide the route length by eight because both available mat sizes are eight feet long. Then multiply by the number of mats needed across the route.
Basic formula
Route length ÷ 8 × mats across. Add 10–30% for turns, overlap, staging, and layout adjustments.
Example quantities
- 50-foot route: 7 mats one-wide or 14 mats two-wide before extras
- 100-foot route: 13 mats one-wide or 26 mats two-wide before extras
- 200-foot route: 25 mats one-wide or 50 mats two-wide before extras
Always round up. These figures are planning estimates rather than an engineered access design.
When to add more mats
- Turns and equipment maneuvering areas
- Loading, log-handling, or material staging zones
- Wider machines or routes requiring two mats across
- Soft, uneven, saturated, or sensitive ground
- Transitions between driveways, curbs, and lawns
Choose 3×8 or 4×8
The 3×8 size is useful through gates and tight side yards. The 4×8 size provides more coverage for primary lanes, turns, and working zones. Many crews combine both sizes.
