The practical difference
Plywood is readily available, but it absorbs moisture, can warp or splinter, and has no purpose-built traction pattern. HDPE ground protection mats resist water, include built-in handholds, and provide two tread surfaces for repeat outdoor use.

Compare cost per use
Compare the number of expected jobs, replacement plywood, handling time, cleanup, and potential turf restoration—not only the first purchase. Reusable mats cost more initially but can serve across many projects when used, cleaned, and stored correctly.
When plywood may still make sense
Plywood can remain useful for limited, light-duty protection on firm, dry surfaces. It should not be treated as a rated substitute for a properly selected ground-protection or access system.
Important: No portable surface mat can correct every soil, slope, weather, or loading condition. Evaluate each site and follow the equipment manufacturer’s requirements.
Choose the right reusable mat
Use 3×8 mats for restricted gates and narrow paths. Use 4×8 mats for broader lanes, turns, and working pads.
